USFS - Tongass National Forest Recreation Cabins

The Tongass National Forest is almost 17 million acres in size and is larger than the state of West Virginia. It occupies the "panhandle" or southeast portion of Alaska. There are about 150 cabins in the Tongass National Forest. They are located in scenic and often remote areas. Many of the cabins may be reached only by boat or airplane.

Alaska residents and visitors can use their major credit cards and a toll-free telephone number (1-877-444-6777) to make reservations for the popular public recreation cabins on the Tongass National Forest. Visitors can also make reservations via the internet at http://www.reserveusa.com. Reservations are on a first come, first served basis for individuals. Commercial use is prohibited. New cabin fees have been developed, and are based upon cabin features, condition, and demand and include a reservation fee. Cabin rates will range from $25 to $45 per night, with the majority at $35. Some cabins will feature an off-season discount. All cabin receipts are used for operation and maintenance.

Any change in cabin or reservation dates is subject to a $10 fee. Cancellations within 14 days of arrival are assessed the $10 fee and forfeit on night's cabin fee.

Reservations may be made up to 180 days in advance. All permittees must be at least 18 years of age. Any number of persons can occupy the cabin. Permits are limited to 7 days between April 1 and October 31 and 10 days between November 1 and March 31. Checkout time is 12 noon. Gear should be packed and out of the cabin for the next group. Permits will not be issued to commercial guides or outfitters for commercial purposes.
